LAURENT KARST, ARCHITECT/DESIGNER - ARTIST

Laurent Karst studied under Gaetano Pesce at the Strasbourg School of Architecture and Industrial Design at the Domus Academy in Milan.

Having worked with major Parisian architecture and design firms, including Jean Nouvel’s agency, he has been developing, for several years, small-scale projects at his own architectural and design agency, Atelier 16 – Architecture. These projects range from private homes to door handles, where attention to detail, materials, and gestures are paramount.

Early in his career, he created three avant-garde clothing collections for an industrial client using technical fabrics. The new design of CHAPEAU K follows this essential approach of utility and gesture, with a focus on precision and exceptional craftsmanship.

As an artist, Laurent Karst develops numerous contemporary art installations in France and abroad, bridging the gap between art and science through the Labofactory and Percept-Lab collectives.

HISTORY

Discover the story of CHAPEAU K. The fusion of exceptional craftsmanship and innovation, where every step celebrates the timeless elegance of design.

2011
The Beginnings

CHAPEAU K was born in 2011, driven by the vision of Laurent Karst, a design that wants to combine artisanal craftsmanship with a contemporary approach.
The side handle, a signature design idea, immediately becomes its hallmark: a detail that is both aesthetic and functional, crafted to simplify the gesture of wearing this new hat design.

2013
First Public Presentation

The first prototypes are presented in preview at the Boutique des Arts Décoratifs in Paris under the YOKOMEN name brand.
The store window is entirely dedicated to showcasing the collection for several months.
For a year, the museum markets the hats in limited series, and the collection enjoys great success and recognition.

2015
Reflection and Maturation

During this period, YOKOMEN remains on pause. Laurent Karst refines his concept, explores new manufacturing methods, and meets various artisans to perfect the technique.
A necessary break to discreetly evolve the brand while staying true to its original spirit: simplicity, ergonomics, and timeless elegance.

2024
Relaunch / Incubation

After years of development, the YOKOMEN collections are reborn as CHAPEAU K.
The launch of an online boutique and a new collection marks the rebirth of the brand, now better equipped to meet the demands of a discerning audience.
With its patented side handle and design, CHAPEAU K creates unique and authentic creations.

2025
The Renaissance

This year, CHAPEAU K strengthens its presence and continues to captivate a growing number of followers, thanks to the rigor, quality, and originality of its models. Positive feedback confirms the reliability and comfort of the hats, reflecting a growing interest from the public and a positive momentum for the brand.

2025
New collection

July 4, 2025 – Galerie Alley (3 Frères Street, Montmartre, France) and Galerie Lebensson (46 Ashfield Street, London E1 2AJ, United Kingdom) are the first dealers of the brand. Hats can be tried on and ordered directly online. Soon, many other galleries around the world will join Chapeau K to become dealers.

FABRICATION

Values that are dear to the brand, such as quality and excellence "made in France", are reflected in the choice of fabrics as well as in the attention to detail and craftsmanship.

The entire collection is crafted in one of the rare French millinery, Dandurand et Fils. Founded in 1834, this millinery has an exceptional know-how that has been passed down through generations.

All fabrics used are carefully interlined to ensure better shape retention. CHAPEAU K presents a felt hat, semi-rigid in form.

At the end of the manufacturing process, the hat is "pampered" with steam on metal molds that give it a specific curve and unique shape.

The CHAPEAU K models are mostly made in high-quality fabrics, available in various colors and patterns, selected from designer fabric end-of-series collections.

They can also be made from a variety of other fabrics, colors, patterns, and materials.

Each hat is numbered and produced in very limited editions, usually limited to 20 pieces.

Some rare models, numbered from 1 to 4 pieces, as well as exclusive models, sometimes numbered from 1 to 2 or 1 to 4, may also be created as part of unique collaborations with renowned designers or artists.
